Plitvice Lakes National Park
The interaction of water, air, geological substratum, and organisms, along with special physical-chemical and biological conditions, made possible the formation of travertine, which blocked watercourses and created a series of lakes, barriers, and waterfalls.
The totality of the mentioned processes, their unique ecology, and the exceptional beauty of the area make the Plitvice Lakes National Park, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, unique and universally valuable. The Park is 55 kilometres from the Zlatna Nit Resort.
Plitvice Lakes
Plitvice Lakes is a national park that can hardly be described in words. Equally, no photo or picture can convey the marvellous beauty of the most famous Croatian lakes, the magnificent Plitvice Lakes. This world-renowned national park is adorned with imposing lakes created from a relief that continuously changes its shape and thus the park’s appearance. That’s why many return to the lakes year after year.
The Plitvice Lakes are located in the eastern part of Lika between two mountains: Mala Kapela and Lička Plješivice. The lakes are not located at a very high altitude and are wholly integrated into the mountain-forest environment. Many say these lakes look like they belong in this beautiful depression.
The national park is home to sixteen larger lakes, each with its own name, but smaller lakes connected by waterfalls and interesting terrain are gorgeous. Plitvice Lakes are divided into Upper Lakes (there are 12 of them), which are located on a dolomite bedrock, and Lower Lakes (of which there are 4), which are cut in a limestone canyon. They owe their names to the inhabitants of that area, who simply divided them according to their accommodation, and over time, the names also took root in the regiment.
